Touchstone: Narratives in Contemporary Canadian Inuit Art

Abstract

This thesis is an exploration of the origins of contemporary Canadian Inuit art with a special emphasis on the Houston family. It touches on continued and competing narratives on the creation of Inuit art, with a theoretical emphasis on the work of Alfed Gell. Drawing on interviews with John Houston, the thesis explores how these narratives have interacted with a new generation of artists.
