A Reply to Geoffrey Greif

Abstract

Replies to Geoffrey L. Greif's (2003) critique of the author's (2002) deeper ecological approach toward conducting social work. Greif's perception of Carol Meyer's & Edgar Auerswald's work as important for associating ecological models with systems theory is supported; however, it is argued that Greif fails to comprehend the author's attempt to develop a social ecological model of social work practice that is not based upon systems theory. It is asserted that systems-based ecological paradigms for performing social work ultimately create dichotomies between clients & social workers. Three principles that should guide the creation of future ecological models for social work practice are stated, eg, the significance of cooperation & mutuality. Indeed, it is claimed that several social work theorists have called for an ecological social work perspective that acknowledges the connection between the well-being of one's physical surroundings & one's psychological & social health. 4 References.
