Abstract
This paper analyzes the existing body of literature concerning the rebound effect, and attempts to synthesize region specific data about the rebound effect in the Halifax Regional Municipality. By using pre-existing econometric models, which are based on price elasticities, a preliminary estimation of the rebound effect has been found, at a value of -0.52. This value is slightly higher than the average estimations for the rebound effect, which suggest a value of -0.49. By applying this data to the total residential energy consumption in the Halifax Regional Municipality, the rebound effect can be found to have an impact of ~$2,100,000 CDN. Moving forward, it is recommended that energy efficiency programs include education of the rebound effect in order to try and limit its impact.
