Business Ecosystem Services Review: A Nova Scotia Case Study

Abstract

Recent efforts to assess the state and value of ecosystems on a global level have been increasing, within this research, ecosystem services and their relation to businesses has also been expanding. Although there are gaps in the existing literature on the accuracy and applicability of measuring and valuating ecosystem services, jurisdictions are beginning to recognize that ecosystems provide essential services to the economy. In Nova Scotia Canada, the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act recognizes this interrelation. This thesis discusses why ecosystem services should be given higher priority by businesses by demonstrating the applicability of the Corporate Ecosystem Services Review using a local company, Acadian Seaplants Limited, as a case example. This thesis focuses on the state of the coastal zone, the results show that Nova Scotia is experiencing threats to ecosystem health and this is resulting in economic losses. The discussion investigates the incorporation of environment and economy and explains that there is a business case for recognizing ecosystem services as limited resources that are essential to business operation and human well being.
