Abstract

Toronto’s inner city laneways provide miles of public space. A deeply rooted structure embodies generations of inhabitants which form the pattern and rhythm of harmonious settlement. Proposals to densify the laneways threaten the balance and fundamental character of Toronto’s inner city residential neighbourhoods. How can we interpret the deep structure of these neighbourhoods to understand the limits, give them new meaning and find appropriate means of in-habitation?
