Abstract

This thesis examines the situation of community translation (CT) in Canada and aims at proposing a training model to better address the Canadian society’s needs. The research is rooted in the fields of translation studies and education, with a comparative approach, studying, the situation of CT in Australia, New Zealand, Spain, and the United-State in addition to Canada. To design training models, we used a framework for a pedagogical reflection that incorporates educators’ social responsibility and citizenship components to training. Approaches based on social justice education and the ecosystemic approach were applied to inform pedagogical design decisions. According to the research, there is a multitude of CT services and education models available around the world but not in Canada where efforts are duplicated, services are uneven, and quality is uncertain. We offer training models for different levels, in different formats, in less traditional ways for Canadian universities and frontline professionals.
