Abstract

This article studies both the story and the legend of Buffalo Bill. It deals with three separate aspects. First, the transition from history (the real adventures of the hero) to literature (their narration in dime-novel format). Then, the media effect of magnification created by the switch to the theatre and the circus. Finally, the narrative proliferation of the legend, freed from any connection to actual history. Buffalo Bill appears as one of the first, and of the most successful cases of adaptation to the star system.

Cet article étudie l'histoire et la légende de Buffalo Bill en trois étapes : le passage du registre historique (les exploits réels du personnage) au registre littéraire (leur mise en récit sous forme de romans feuilleton), l'amplification médiatique par le passage au théâtre et au cirque, et enfin la prolifération narrative de la légende libérée de son référent historique. Buffalo Bill est présenté comme une des premières manifestations, et des plus accomplies, du star system.

Questo articolo studia la storia e la leggenda di Buffalo Bill in tre tappe : la transizione dal registro storico (le avventure reali del personaggio) al registro letterario (il loro racconto sotto forma di romanzo d'appendice), l'amplificazione mediatica creata dal passaggio al teatro e al circo, e infine la proliferazione narrativa della leggenda, liberata da ogni legame con la storia. Buffalo Bill appare come una delle prime manifestazioni dello star system, e al contempo come una delle sue manifestazioni più riuscite.

Dieser Beitrag zeichnet die Geschichte und die Legende Buffalo Bills in drei Etapen nach: vom historischen Standpunkt (die tatsächlichen Heldentaten der Person) über ihre Literarisierung (ihre Narrativierung im Feuilletonroman) sowie ihre medialen Extensionen durch Aufführungen in Theater und Zirkus bis hin zur narrativen Verbreitung der von ihrem historischen Vorbild befreiten Legende. Buffalo Bill stellt sich so als einer der ersten und gelungensten Beispiele des Starsystems dar.
