dc.description.abstractThe following report highlights research completed on the influences behind student participation in Dalhousie’s Eco-Olympics. The research group conducted both intercept as well as captive style questionnaires in order to obtain the opinions of those who have not yet participated in this competition, as well as those who have. Within these surveys, questions were designed to align with three topics surrounding participation: reasons behind lack of participation; communication tools; and the use of prizes and incentives. Data was coded and analyzed in order to provide a discussion and generate recommendations on how to improve next year’s competition, as well as recommendations on further research. Here, it was found that a lack of participation could be accredited to a lack of awareness of the competition. Within communication tools, the research pointed to posters as well as social media as being the most effective means of communication to increase awareness. Last, it was found that prize incentives are a positive way to increase participation in Dalhousie’s Eco-Olympics, and other residence activities alike. Further research is recommended in several areas. This will ensure that the information provided within this report will convert from exploratory to transformative – increasing participation in residence activities on Dalhousie’s Campus while also achieving broader sustainability goals.en_US
