dc.description.abstractDemand Side Management (DSM) and real-time pricing (RTP) are methods by which the consumer can participate in the electricity market and reduce electricity expenditures. By having more active consumers in the electricity market, DSM and RTP have economic advantages. By allowing users to participate in the market, a more elastic relationship between supply and demand is achieved. Furthermore, many customers are now introducing renewable sources to their homes in an attempt to reduce their current electricity bill. The introduction of demand side renewable sources can be coupled with the existing DSM scheme by imposing new constraints to further minimize the cost to consumers and utilities (both generation and distribution). In finding the optimal load levels with information about day-ahead renewable generation capacity, a reduced consumer payout and a more desirable load profile is obtained. This allows for further studies in distributed renewable generation applications and the effects they have on the future grid.en_US
