Vivian Howard is an Associate Professor in the School of Information Management and is the Associate Dean (Academic) for the Faculty of Management. Her primary research interests involve the pleasure reading habits of various groups, particularly youth. Her doctoral research analyzed the role of pleasure reading and the public library in the lives of young teens, aged 12-15 years of age. This research explored the key barriers and motivators underlying both pleasure reading and public library use for this age group. A currently funded research project involves the creation of an information portal devoted to Atlantic Canadian authors and illustrators of books for children and teens.
Her teaching closely parallels her research interests, teaching elective classes in services and resources for children and teens (INFO 6250 and 6450). She also developed a new elective class on Reading and Reading Practices (INFO 6070) which examines various issues related to contemporary reading practices including book clubs, mass reading events, book marketing and digital reading. As Academic Director of the Bachelor of Management Program, she has a strong interest in management practice and theory and therefore feels particularly fortunate to teach the core classes INFO 5570 (Organizational Management and Strategy) and MGMT 5000 (Management Without Borders).
